SAFETY FIRST at ALL Council’s Waste Transfer Facilities

Back

South Burnett Councillors from across the region are calling on all parents and caregivers to observe a safety-first approach at Council’s waste facilities,

and to know where their children are after school, weekends and over the school holidays.

Despite safety barriers and signage in place at council’s facilities, a recent spate of youngsters in large roll on, roll off  (RORO) bins scavenging or playing has raised concerns for operators.

Many of these large RORO bins are on site to accept domestic waste from users of Council’s waste transfer facilities.  Often people aren’t checking to see if there is someone in the bin when they throw items of rubbish into the bins.

Waste transfer stations are operational facilities where large trucks and frequent vehicle movements are common. These facilities are not a place where children should be playing or frequenting at any time.

But this call out isn’t just to parents and caregivers.  Our personnel have also caught a number or older and elderly people in these large bins scavenging in recent weeks.

The bins are large and deep, often making it very difficult for the most able-bodied individual to get out. Offenders will be referred to local police for unlawful entry and trespass.
