Council Investigates Options to Encourage Responsible Pet Ownership

Back

South Burnett Regional Council is encouraging responsible pet ownership with an amendment to Council’s procedure for dog registration requirements,

requiring dogs to be microchipped before being registered with Council, in accordance with state government requirements to ensure all dogs and cats born after 10 April 2009 be microchipped.

“Council wants to assist our residents in complying with state legislation and will implement reduced fee microchipping days across the region to encourage responsible pet ownership,” said Mayor Kathy Duff.

Dog registration renewals for 2024/2025 will be issued shortly and residents are reminded to ensure your dog is microchipped by attending a microchipping day during the period September to December 2024. Further information on microchipping days will be provided to residents once confirmed.

“To assist our community further we will be investigating funding and partnership opportunities to encourage dog and cat owners to desex their animals,” said Mayor Duff.

Residents are also reminded of the pensioner discount which can also apply to dog registrations.  Please provide evidence of your pension status to any of Council’s Customer Contact Centres in order to have your records updated and to be eligible for the pensioner discounted rate. This discount can then be immediately applied.

Dog owners are asked to ensure their details are kept up to date with Council, whether this be change of ownership, change of address or if sadly your dog has passed away.
