Get Ready and Be Prepared
Prepare your home
Natural disasters impact thousands of Queenslanders every year. Each disaster has lasting effects on people, their property and their possessions. Disasters can happen fast and without much warning. This means that it is hard to react to a disaster if you have not planned for one.
People who get ready before a disaster will know what to do and have the things they need to act quickly and stay safe. The best way to protect you and your family is to have a good plan.

Understand your Risk
Natural disasters affect Queenslanders more than anyone else in Australia. Being prepared for severe weather is an important part of living here.
The most common types of disasters that can happen in Queensland are:

- Bushfires

Make a household Emergency Plan
Extreme weather can happen very fast.
Having a plan means everyone in your household knows what to do if the weather turns bad. When you are making a plan, you might want to include your neighbours or friends. People you know who are elderly or have special needs may need your help.
If you need help making an emergency plan, ask a friend or neighbour to help.

Pack an Emergency Kit
Having an emergency kit stocked and ready is Step 3 to getting ready.
Queensland's extreme weather can cause your home to lose power (electricity), water and gas. You also may not be able to get to a supermarket or pharmacy for supplies. Prepare an emergency kit and store it somewhere safe so you have the things you need when the weather turns bad.
Download and print the GRQ Emergency Kit checklist.pdf (getready.qld.gov.au) which is best filled in with pen on paper so you can take it shopping.

Know your neighbours
- Disasters rarely (if ever) only impact one house in a neighbourhood.
- By knowing your neighbours and being aware of their circumstances, you may be able to identify who might need additional assistance or who may be able to help you.
- Your family and your household will be much safer if you share your knowledge with your neighbours and work together to have a safer community.
Do your kids feel safe?
- You know how to keep our kids physically safe, but how do you prepare them emotionally for dangerous weather?
