Kingaroy Transformation Project – Update - Increase in Parking for People with a Disability and Senior Citizens

Back

More accessable parking for people with disabilities and the elderly has been identified at the top of Council’s list of priorities for the Kingaroy Transformation Project (KTP).

Currently, there are only four (4) on street People with Disability (PWD) parking bays within a total fourteen (14) spaces. Upon completion of the project, this will increase to thirty (30) PWD bays.

For senior citizens, an additional seven (7) accessible parking spaces or “green bays” will be added to the parking design. These spaces will be sited beside disability parking bays, sharing kerb ramp access to the footpath.

“December 3 is International Day of People with Disablity (IDPwD) which makes this the perfect time to celebrate the inclusiveness of this project. IDPwD is a day that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions,” Mayor Otto said.

South Burnett Regional Council will also work with business and building owners to improve access to businesses where possible while footpath upgrades are undertaken.

Inclusive access to shops has long been an issue within the Kingaroy CBD and the KTP will go a long way to improve this. There are some limitations such as building floor heights and existing infrastructure, however South Burnett Regional Council will work closely with businesses to provide improved access to as many shops as possible.

APM Kingaroy team leader Jason Lynam said, “APM is proud to support this important project which will provide people with a disability safe access to Kingaroy’s CBD. We know first-hand how worthwhile initiatives like this are and the impact it will make in many peoples lives, and I commend South Burnett Regional Council for their considered approach in the decision to increase disability parking and inclusive access.”

In addition to the improvements delivered through the Kingaroy Transformation Project, Council is proud to also deliver the Murgon and Blackbutt footpath improvement works and is also working with our community to deliver the all-inclusive Butter Factory Park in Nanango which commenced this week.

“These projects will significantly improve disabled access in each location,” Mayor Otto said.
