Official Ground Breaking marks start of the Kingaroy Transformation Project
South Burnett Regional Council has marked the turning of the first sod as construction begins on the long-awaited Kingaroy Transformation Project (KTP).
Mayor Brett Otto and Councillors, The Hon David Littleproud MP, local Members of Parliament, senior representatives from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, stakeholders and shop owners were all on hand to break ground at Monday’s official ceremony.
The project will be a partnership delivered over the next 2 years with $4.5M coming from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund with South Burnett Regional Council committing $9.4M from Council’s funded depreciation and restricted cash reserves.
Key objectives of the Kingaroy Transformation Project are a focus on human, social, and economic enabling infrastructure creating a “Community of Choice”. The project footprint takes in road corridors across Alford, Kingaroy, Haly and Glendon Streets.
The design also involves considerable replacement of ageing infrastructure including roads, footpaths, lighting, stormwater, street furniture, landscaping and water mains.
Further upgrades include:
- Replacement of all existing dilapidated infrastructure
- Installation of approximately 24 additional disabled car spaces along with 7 “green parks” designated for elderly and pram parking
- Upgraded street lighting and CCTV leading to improved safety
- Widened footpaths and alfresco spaces for dining along with improved event facilities
- Featured landscape and legacy trees representing the colours and attractions of our region
- Interactive lighting and lanterns to symbolise the linkage between our region’s towns and villages
- “Smart Country” planning with underground conduits for future technology including high speed data and public Wi-Fi
Mayor Otto said “Over time, the deterioration of below and above ground infrastructure, has created a tired environment for the Kingaroy community, visitors and potential investors. This project will address these issues and is an example of what can be achieved when different levels of government and the local community work together.” “We sincerely thank the Australian Government for its vital funding for this project, and the co-operation and support from the Department of Transport and Main Roads” he said.
