Next Stages of the Burnett Feasibility Study - Demand Assessment

Back

South Burnett Regional Council is committed to supporting the well-being of the South Burnett region through regional development.

One way in which we are seeking to achieve this is through expanding irrigated agriculture to deliver new jobs and economic growth to the South Burnett. As part of our work toward this outcome, Council have engaged consultants KBR to conduct further investigations into options to improve the water supply and security of our region.

The Burnett Feasibility Study funded under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund (NWIDF) delivered the initial stages of a program with completion of the Strategic Business Case and the release of a Draft Options Analysis. Council is now progressing targeted assessments of water projects identified in the Options Analysis.

There are three projects that are underway:

  • Blackbutt – Options for additional water supply;
  • Barlil and West Barambah Weirs – consider interest in water supply from a new Barlil Weir and Barambah Creek Weir; and
  • Gordonbrook Dam – considering converting use of the dam from urban water supply to irrigation supply.

Council is seeking community input to inform how these projects should progress. KBR will be holding workshops to seek your feedback on these opportunities, particularly to assess if there is sufficient community support to proceed to the next stage of business cases for infrastructure development.

Workshops will be taking place around the region in March as follows:

Monday, 7 March 2022:

  • Blackbutt Water Supply Options – 11:30am at Hotel Radnor, Blackbutt
  • Barlil and West Barambah Weirs – 4:00pm at the Murgon RSL

Tuesday, 8 March 2022:

  • Gordonbrook Dam for Irrigation – 9:00am at the Kingaroy Town Hall

All interested parties are encouraged to come along and participate.
