Council Wears Denim to Oppose Sexual Violence
Back
South Burnett Regional Councillors wore denim to the Council meeting this week as a visible means of protest against misconceptions of sexual violence.
Mayor Brett Otto addressed the meeting saying that the South Burnett was not immune to sexual assault and that men in particular needed to step up and acknowledge that sexual assault is never acceptable.
“’No’ means ‘no’. There is no excuse for sexual violence,” said Mayor Otto.
Wearing denim began as a protest against victim blaming. It developed into a ‘Peace over Violence’ movement. The South Burnett’s local Centacare agency organised the wearing of denim on Wednesday as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
