A local worm farmer describes the joys of worm farming:-

“We store all our organic scraps in the fridge for a week. We keep everything from tea bags, apple cores to vegie peels. Once a week, we feed the worms. The kids love it – they play with the worms and check they are happy.

“The kids also enjoy putting the ‘blanket’ back on top of the worms to keep them warm. This blanket is just paper which is placed on top of the soil and worms. This is a great way to use cardboard boxes, paper, and junk mail!

“Worm farms are a great way to play with kids outdoors and introduce concepts of waste reduction and recycling, animal care and environmental sustainability. They are really low maintenance, don’t make any noise and don’t require you to buy extra food.

“The worms give back by giving beautiful, healthy soil (which we use for new plants or place around herbs when we go away for a week).”
