South Burnett Wins National Road Safety Award
The South Burnett Regional Council has won the Schools Program award at the national Australian Road Safety Foundation Awards in Parliament House, Canberra, earlier this week.
Council’s nomination was for School Safety Projects undertaken across the following schools to improve operations for all users:
- Kingaroy State High School, Kingaroy
- Nanango State School, Nanango
- St Mary’s Catholic College, Kingaroy
- Taabinga State School, Kingaroy
- Wondai State School, Wondai
Mayor Brett Otto welcomed the award on behalf of Council and staff, saying “This is a prestigious award. Out of all the schools across Australia, the South Burnett Regional Council has excelled in putting safety first, for students, families, school staff, and road users.”
The award is national recognition for the work undertaken in liaising with schools by Council to deliver quality outcomes to improve the awareness for all users of school-based infrastructure. Elements of work included modifications to:
- School crossings
- Bus set down bays
- Carparking
- Pedestrian crossings
- People with Disability (PWD) Bays
- Footpaths and pram ramps
- Line marking
- Tree removal/ visual obstructions
Council would like to also acknowledge the schools’ contribution towards these outcomes, with helpful insights into the quality of works achieved through this collaboration.
The Australian Road Safety Awards acknowledge the achievements of leading road safety stakeholders and provide an opportunity to formally recognise their commitment to improving road safety outcomes.
