Mayor Welcomes Rail Trail Flood Repair Funding

Back

Mayor Brett Otto has confirmed that South Burnett Regional Council will receive $631,141 for surface repairs on the Kingaroy to Kilkivan Rail Trail.

This funding was approved under the Community and Recreational Assets Recovery and Resilience Program being administered by the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport.

Mayor Otto said, “I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the funding allocation being jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements that the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport are assisting to deliver.”

This funding allocation is part of a $75 million jointly funded Australian and Queensland Government initiative to assist in the clean-up and repair of community and recreational assets damaged by the extraordinary disaster events of financial year (FY) 2021-22.

This funding will allow Council to complete numerous surface reconstruction works and repairs along the rail trail, particularly in sections where bitumen has been stripped away and for restoration works and gravel reinstatement in damaged gravel sections of the trail.

Whilst temporary repairs have been completed to allow usage of the rail trail, Council welcomes this funding which will allow for permanent repairs to reinstate the integrity of the surface and provide a level of resilience to those sections which continue to be damaged with further rain events.

Cr Kathy Duff said she is excited to receive this wonderful support to repair and upgrade the flood damaged sections of the rail trail. “There is a lot of work to do on the northern end in particular and I know the hundreds of users will be excited to have full use of the trail again.”
