Mayor announces demolition of buildings in Kingaroy Street
South Burnett Mayor Brett Otto has welcomed the commencement of demolition works on the disused buildings in Kingaroy Street, Kingaroy.
“The Kingaroy community has been looking forward to seeing this start for some time, and I am very pleased to have been part of engaging with the property owners to get it happening,” the Mayor said.
Council officers under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mark Pitt been working collaboratively with the Barron family for some months now and the Mayor acknowledged their efforts.
The buildings were once an active part of the Kingaroy CBD including businesses such as Mackay’s Carpet Court, a hair salon and an army disposal store.
Demolition works will be undertaken by experienced contractors, qualified to manage the careful removal and disposal of asbestos materials in accordance with government and council regulations.
Initially the land will be cleared to a clean green-field site with the intention of attracting investment in suitable new businesses.
Mayor Otto thanked the property owners for their co-operation and commitment to the community of Kingaroy, “we have been having productive discussions soon after I was elected and I have appreciated their willingness to work together to reach a good outcome for our community,” Mayor Otto said.
“It will be the end of an era that is part of our town’s history, however the old buildings have had their day and it’s time for something new that will meet the needs of the community,” the Mayor said.
The next step will be to scope and cost potential upgrade works to the road and footpath in front of the area, “I will be taking this to council to consider as part of the process. This section of road along with the old kerb and channelling and footpath is long overdue for replacement,” Mayor Otto said.
