Potential Discoloured Water in Kingaroy and Blackbutt

Back

South Burnett Regional Council has been advised by SunWater that the Tarong pipeline will be shut down from Sunday 7 May 2023 up to and including Sunday 21 May 2023.

Council will be required to run 100% from Gordonbrook Dam for this period for the Kingaroy water supply.

Due to the change of water source, pockets of discoloured water will result. Blackbutt will be required to use Boobir Dam which has high levels of iron and manganese which results in discoloured water.

Gordonbrook Dam and Boobir Dam both have elevated dissolved iron and manganese level suspended in the water. When the water supply demand is low, the by-product can be a ‘rust’ look or discoloured water within the reticulation supply. This can at times build up in low flow areas of the network and can cause pockets of discoloured water that while aesthetically displeasing is bacteriologically safe to drink.

Until Council can change back to the Boondooma water the only treatment available is advising Council when the problem occurs and crews will flush the water main in that area.

Residents are advised to take appropriate action such as, storing enough drinking water for this period or switching to alternative tank supply.

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks you for your patience whilst the pipeline is shutdown.
