The Local Disaster Management Group, chaired by Cr Potter and who continue to meet on a quarterly basis, have carried out many successful projects over the current term of Council.
As a result of the 2019/early 2020 bushfires, our Disaster Management Officer worked with Western Downs Regional Council to create a sub-plan for both the South Burnett and Western Downs Local Disaster Management Plans. The South Burnett and Western Downs Local Disaster Management Group advocate the development of a strategic approach to mitigate and minimise risk as well as developing a Local Area Emergency Plan in identified vulnerable areas such as the Bunya Mountains.
Through a successful grant application, the plan was prepared, implemented and community education was provided for and with the Bunya Mountains Community. The project included consultation and engagement in development of the plans and preparedness engagement activities for the Bunya Mountains community.
The Bunya Mountains Disaster Management Sub Group also hold quarterly meetings and in November 2022, the group ran a successful exercise where testing of the plan was undertaken. Some key initiatives and outcomes were observed and the group continue to work on these improvements.
