Councillors Head to Proston for the First Council Workshop

Back

South Burnett Regional Council held its first workshop of the term this week in Proston, as part of an initiative to connect with all pockets of the shire by taking meetings on-the-road.

A Councillor-led push to strengthen their understanding of the wider region has seen the Councillors and Executive Staff visit Proston’s Community Kitchen and local works depot on Tuesday 7 May 2024. These workshops tackle issues and a wide range of topics such as road maintenance, water infrastructure, budgetary planning and also provide an opportunity for direct community consultation with Council’s Leadership Team.

The delegation took the opportunity to meet with the team behind Proston Community Kitchen, who were awarded a $1,000 grant from Council that was auspiced by the Proston & District Lions Club. Mayor Kathy Duff praised the group for their hard work and noted that their community-centric scheme had done great work with the recent funding injection.

“Our Community Grants program is there to help local not-for-profits and clubs and we’ve supported a worthy cause in Proston’s Community Kitchen,” said Mayor Kathy Duff.

The team also used the day to meet with long-serving Council staff member Lenny and his staff at the Proston Depot, inspecting the problems with the local roads network first-hand. The Depot covers a road network extending over 70kms from Proston right out to the northern shire boundary.

Mayor Duff said that the day was a fantastic learning experience for the new Council team, “People like Lenny and his team know their areas better than anyone, it’s hard to top local knowledge. We’re taking a direct approach to understanding and solving local issues as we put together the next budget and this was a great way to start that process.”
