The 2024/25 Water and Wastewater Budget Continues to Deliver on Council’s Long-Term Strategy for the Community’s Utility Infrastructure

Back

This year, Council’s water budget will deliver $2.6M in replacements and upgrades including:

  • Stuart River Rising Main $822k
  • 1000 Water Metre Replacements $125k
  • Drainage repairs to Gordonbrook Spillway $87k
  • Water Main Replacements $850k comprising of:
    • Macalister Street, Murgon
    • Beresford Street, Proston
    • Markwell Street, Kingaroy
    • Glendon Street, Kingaroy
    • Wickham Street, Nanango.

Additional major projects for water include the continuation of planning and design for the region’s major trunk infrastructure needs and AFC upgrade of Gordonbrook spillway.

Mayor Kathy Duff said “This year will be an important step in planning to improve the water quality with Council to undertake the first stage option analysis to upgrade water treatment plants and water quality reviews. We will also undertake a major air scour program in Kingaroy to reduce dirty water caused by build ups of bio film in water mains, and we expect this program will commence in the coming months.”

A major shift to trade waste policy and enforcement will be driving the agenda for wastewater infrastructure in 2024/25 with Council budgeting $3.2M in repairs to its state of the art Nereda Treatment Plant in Kingaroy. The major damage was the result of a trade waste discharge containing acid and FOG (fats, oil and grease) into Council sewer network. As a result, Council is still investigating the incident and will introduce tougher policies and changes to its trade waste management renewal and management.  Other projects for wastewater will continue with the regions SCADA telemetry upgrades and commencement of trunk infrastructure sewer design along First Avenue in Kingaroy to enable development.
