Council Announces Increases to Waste Management Fees & Charges
South Burnett Regional Council is committed to providing a sustainable Waste Management program across the region.
The program must be operated responsibly under State Waste Legislation. Council’s Environmental Authority requires waste operations to meet a range of statutory obligations and requirements to minimize environmental harm.
In meeting its ongoing obligations, the Council’s Waste Management Levy will increase in 2024/25 by $28 to $213 per annum. This helps fund activities to ensure compliance with state and commonwealth legislation, develop new waste facilities and rehabilitate former landfill sites.
The 2024/25 financial year will see a rise in Council’s waste collection charges. These will rise by 6%. These waste collection utility charges include weekly general waste and fortnightly recycling services within the designated waste collection areas throughout the region.
These moderate increases cover costs associated with the collection and transportation of waste streams to the various waste facilities within the South Burnett region.
The introduction of weighbridges in Murgon (currently operational), Wondai and Nanango this financial year, will assist in the management of Council’s waste sites.
Another significant cost of operation is illegal dumping at transfer stations, this is an area of continual focus.
“Landfill cells are expensive to construct, which means the more recyclable waste streams we can divert from landfill, the better. Council can save money by recycling. Combined and unsorted waste can be costly”, Mayor Duff said.
Council is encouraging all retail and commercial operators to separate their waste streams before disposing at a waste facility. Not only will you be helping reduce pressures on our landfill capacities, your waste charges will also be a lot less as recyclable streams are not charged.
