Negotiations on a formal agreement between South Burnett Regional Council and Visit South Burnett Inc. have concluded this week without reaching a mutually satisfactory outcome.
Mayor Keith Campbell, Portfolio holder for Economic Development explained that tourism remains a potential driver of jobs growth and high yield commerce in our region. “I would like to reaffirm that Council is moving forward with the approach that nothing short of radical restructure of the marketing for our region can deliver the change required to increase visitation”, Mayor Campbell said.
Through the tourism arm of Council, Discover South Burnett, recently hosted an industry first tourism operator networking function, “South Burnett Unpacked” at Yallakool Park on Bjelke-Petersen Dam. Discover South Burnett will use its published forward marketing activity to work with operators who want to leverage this activity or partner for greater benefit. Further, working directly with destination events across the region through a mentoring and training program will continue to build momentum increasing the marketing outcomes.
Councillor Danita Potter, Portfolio holder for Tourism, said that ‘While South Burnett Regional Council and Visit South Burnett Inc. have not been able to reach a formal agreement we all agree that the brand ‘South Burnett’ has a strong future.”
Discover South Burnett publish activity and results in the quarterly Economic Development Report to Council, available on Council’s website. To engage with Discover South Burnett, please contact Council’s Tourism Officer, Julie Foley on 4189 9100.
