This coming Thursday, 6 July, the South Burnett Regional Council will be hosting a NAIDOC Family Fun Day that will be held from 10.00am in the Dr Ellen Kent Hughes Forecourt in Glendon Street.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first full week in July each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples.  It is not something that is celebrated by indigenous communities alone but is celebrated and recognised together by all Australians.

"I think that is great that during NAIDOC week our indigenous cultural heritage is being celebrated right across our region.” said Cr Kathy Duff

The Family Fun Day will start with a Welcome to Country by Cherbourg Community Council Mayor Arnold Murray followed by a traditional smoking ceremony.

You will be entertained by the local Wakka Wakka Dancers, Library Dreamtime Storytelling, and indigenous face painting.  There will be indigenous art on displays and demonstrations. A free sausage sizzle will be available when those hunger pangs set in.

“It is important to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders throughout the year” said Mayor Keith Campbell “However NAIDOC Week is a time to focus on and show our support to not just our local indigenous community but all indigenous communities throughout Australia and the Torres Strait Islands.”
